Lee Seung Gi’s Comments About Kim Yuna After Sochi Results

As a Korean-American, yesterday’s outcome for the ladies’ figure-skating competition was quite honestly a surprising one for me. I emigrated to the USA at the age of 3 and lived there all my life so my way of thinking and culture is as American as apple pie.  Yesterday’s results weren’t about Russia vs. Korea. It was about the fairness in the judging process and good sportsmanship. Like Katarina Witt, Kurt Browning, and other well known people in the figure skating world,  Kim Yuna not winning the gold came as a huge shock to me. This was not about nationalistic pride, but about obvious score inflation and underscoring going on with the judging panel. Her performance was flawless. She landed all of her jumps perfectly, yet she was underscored and even received a zero for her triple flip during the short program from one of the judges. It makes absolutely no sense since she had a seamless performance set to ‘Send in the Clowns’. It was simply poetry in motion.  Her free skating program set to ‘Adios Nonino’ was pure art. Had I been watching this back home in the USA, I would’ve felt the same way. I am proud to be of Korean ethnicity but always tear up with American pride whenever I land on US soil for visits back  home. Despite the results and her disappointment, she handled the situation with class and aplomb. sochi kimyuna

This morning’s newspapers and online news were full of headlines about Kim Yuna.  Lee Seung Gi, who worked with Kim Yuna for several CF commercials and ‘Smile Boy’, the official song for the FIFA 2010 World Cup Championships, made the following comment about her this morning,”Challenge after challenge….although she is young, I respect her. ” Lee Seung Gi (27, singer) stated,” I have worked with Kim Yuna when we were cast together as CF models and also sang a duet with her.   She rocketed to the world’s best in the figure skating world. After watching her challenge herself again at the Sochi Olympics, although she is young, she commands respect. Kim Yuna, thank you.”
